A highlight of KAUST Bike Week was the 5k Family Bike Tour on Friday February 16 and Social Responsibility and the KAUST community was delighted to welcome residents from the University's host town of Thuwal. The riders, aged 8-60, were all familiar with cycling, but it was a new experience to be part of such a large group and they very much enjoyed sharing the experience with the 300+ members of the KAUST community that took part.
The participation by members of the Thuwal community was enabled thanks to the assistance of Community Life and Health & Safety in co-ordinating the rental of 34 bikes and helmets from Banaweer. Thanks also to the Banaweer and Health & Safety teams for ensuring all the bikes were adjusted to suit the riders and that the helmets were fitted correctly prior to setting off on the cycle route. In addition to enjoying the exercise and understanding the health-giving benefits of cycling, the riders learned about environmentally-friendly transport and gained some essential road awareness skills. At the end of the event the boys said what a great time they had cycling and afterwards at The Harbor Sports Field – they are looking forward to their next visit to KAUST.
Mohammed Al-Jahdali, a local father that accompanied his son on the ride, said: “The event has had a positive impact on the children and young people involved and we hope that such programs will continue between Thuwal community and KAUST.”
Thank you to Community Life, Health & Safety, Banaweer and the volunteers for all their efforts in ensuring our guests from Thuwal had a fantastic morning.
