The annual Sharing is Caring campaign enables the KAUST community to share in the joys of the Ramadan season with our neighbors in Thuwal with its Ramadan Food Pantry and Eid Gifts. This year, the project was adapted to accommodate COVID-19 safety measures and the Eid Gifts were specially selected with the guidance to #stayhome in mind.
Social Responsibility works with the Albir Charitable Association to deliver Eid Gifts to disadvantaged children to ensure the most vulnerable members of our community are included in the University’s educational and social support. With remote schooling introduced by the Ministry of Education to minimize risk of infection during the COVID-19 pandemic, having the resources at home to access online learning became very important. The Eid Gift of a tablet computer enables the recipients, aged 4-18, to keep up with their education while at the same time offering an opportunity to virtually connect with the outside world, so important when movements outside our homes were severely restricted.
Each tablet computer was accompanied by a message of encouragement to use the gift as their own door to knowledge. Children aged 4-11, received a tablet both child- and parent-friendly – protected by a non-slip cover with a useful carrying handle, the device is equipped with a range of controls including time limits, content control and app access control to help parents help children moderate usage. All tablets, for both age groups, have age-appropriate educational apps pre-installed, including books, audio books and interactive stories.
The advantages of a digital learning and communication tool are particularly apparent during this time of distance learning. Gaining familiarity and confidence with digital devices will prepare students for higher education and future employment.
Social Responsibility is grateful to our partners the Albir Society and SMSA, for their support with delivery and KAUST Procurement, for working together in these challenging times to ensure successful completion of this year’s Sharing is Caring.
